tradition d’excellence de John Porter
Known in the past years as The John Porter Memorial Book Prize, The John Porter Tradition of Excellence Book Award was created in 1980 by the Canadian Sociological Association in memory of sociologist John Porter for the purpose of recognizing outstanding published scholarly contributions within the 'John Porter Tradition' to the advancement of sociological knowledge in Canada.
Autrefois connu sous le nom de Prix en mémoire de John Porter, Le Prix du livre dans la tradition d'excellence de John Porter a été instauré en 1980 par la Société canadienne de sociologie en mémoire du sociologue John Porter, dans le but de reconnaître toute contribution académique exceptionnelle publiée dans la 'tradition John Porter' et contribuant à l'avancement du savoir sociologique au Canada.

The committee consists of seven members, including the Chair, appointed by the CSA Executive Committee for a mandate of three years. The membership of the Committee shall reflect an appropriate regional, gender, linguistic, and ethnocultural diversity, as well as the breadth of research interests within the CSA. Membership may be held for a maximum of two consecutive terms, or for an unlimited number of non-consecutive terms.
Le comité est composé de sept membres, incluant son président, nommés par le Comité exécutif de la SCS pour un mandat de trois ans. La composition du comité doit refléter la diversité régionale, linguistique et ethnoculturelle de la SCS. Le comité doit être une juste représentation de la Société, être composé d’hommes et de femmes, de sociologues dont les champs de recherche correspondent aux grands courants qu’on retrouve à la SCS. Un membre du comité peut être nommé pour un deuxième mandat consécutif ou pour un nombre illimité de mandats non consécutifs.

NOMINATION PROCEDURES / PROCÉDURES DE NOMINATION
Deadline for the 2010 Prize is December 31, 2009
Works nominated must be
within the 'John Porter Tradition' by making a distinguished sociological contribution to the understanding of Canadian society. Nominated
works should be:
- Relevant and concerned with one or more major issues of Canadian society;
- Informed by solid theory;
- Buttressed by meticulous research; and,
- Written clearly in language that can be understood by the intelligent lay
person.
The committee strives
to make its recommendations of awards regardless of the work's theorical
perspective, methodological orientation, or substantive subject matter.
For consideration in any given year, nominations must be submitted by December
31 of the previous year to the Chair of the Committee. Nominations might include
a statement outlining the suggested distinguished contribution of the work to
the advancement of sociological knowledge to Canadian society.
A Nomination,
written by a member of the Association, is required for a book to be considered
by the Porter Prize Committee.
The recipient needs not to be a member of the CSA. Authors may not nominate
their own works, or works in which they have a personal or financial interest.
Edited or republished works, and texts designed only for instructional purposes,
may not be nominated. Nominated works must be in English or French and may
be single or multi-authored. Works nominated must have been published
within the three-year period preceding the date of nomination.
A copy of each nominated work must be sent by the nominator to each member of the Committee and two copies must be sent to the Chair of the Committee.
The Committee's recommended nomination shall be ratified by the CSA Executive Committee and the Award will be announced at the following CSA Annual Meeting. The recipient will be invited to deliver a lecture or presentation of the nominated work at the annual meeting subsequent to the official announcement of the nomination.

La date de tombée pour le prix 2010 est le 31 décembre 2009
Les
ouvrages en nomination doivent s'inscrire dans 'la tradition John Porter' en
contribuant de manière significative à la compréhension de la société canadienne
dans une perspective sociologique. Les ouvrages en
nomination devraient:
- s'intéresser à des enjeux importants de la société canadienne,
- reposer sur un cadre théorique solide,
- s'appuyer sur une recherche méticuleuse et
- être rédigés de manière à être compris par une personne non initiée.
Le comité fera ses recommandations sans
égard à l'orientation théorique ou méthodologique ou au sujet étudié.
Pour être considérées dans une année donnée, les propositions doivent être
soumises au plus tard le 31 décembre de l'année précédente au responsable du
comité. Les propositions peuvent inclure un texte soulignant l'apport de
la contribution de l'ouvrage à l'avancement de la connaissance
sociologique dans la société canadienne.
Pour être considérées par le Comité, les nominations doivent être présentées par
écrit par un membre de l'association.
Le récipiendaire n'a pas à être membre de la SCS. Les auteurs ne peuvent
suggérer leur propre livre ou des ouvrages dans lesquels ils ont des intérêts
personnels ou financiers. Les ouvrages réédités et ou republiés et les
textes destinés à des fins académiques seulement ne peuvent être suggérés. Les
ouvrages doivent être rédigés en anglais ou en français et peuvent être signés
par un ou plusieurs auteur(e)s. Les ouvrages doivent avoir été publiés
dans les trois ans qui précèdent la date de leur nomination.
Un exemplaire de chaque ouvrage proposé doit être envoyé à chacun des membres du
Comité et deux exemplairea doivent être envoyés au responsable du Comité.
La recommandation du comité devra être ratifiée par le comité exécutif de la
SCS et le nom du ou de la recipiendaire sera annoncé(e) à la prochaine rencontre
annuelle . Le ou la récipiendaire sera invité(e) lors de la rencontre annuelle
qui suit l'annonce officielle de sa nomination à donner une conférence ou une
communication sur l'ouvrage sélectionné.

The committee’s nomination for the 2009 Porter Prize is Dominique Clement’s Canada's Right Revolution: Social Movements and Social Change, 1937-82, published by University of British Columbia Press, Vancouver, 2008.
The author will present the Porter Lecture at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Sociological Association.

Nominations are now being accepted for year 2010 prize from among books
published over the previous three years. Nominations may be made by CSA
members in good standing or by publishers. The fixed and firm deadline is
December 31 2009.
Please send your proposition to the Chair of the Committee, Dr. Graham Knight,
at the address mentioned above.
Les
