The Canadian Sociology and Anthropology Association (CSAA) is a professional association that promotes research, publication and teaching in Sociology and Anthropology in Canada. Its members include sociologists and anthropologists committed to research or education, in universities, government agencies and business. Its members also include students and individuals from any other discipline or affiliation who share a concern for sociology and anthropology. The Association also promotes subscription to its publications by all the academic or other libraries across Canada and all over the world.
The ongoing activities of the Association comprise:
- the publication, since 1964, of The Canadian Review of Sociology and Anthropology. The Review is a professional journal, published four times a year, including articles and book reviews. All members of the Association receive this journal. Institutions can also subscribe.
- the organization of an annual conference in conjunction with the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences Federation of Canada. In 2006 the annual meeting will be held at York University in Toronto, Ontario. Members receive all relevant information pertaining to the meetings.
- the publication of Society/Société. This newsletter is published three times a year in order to inform members of events and issues considered relevant to the disciplines. Topics include administrative concerns, activities of the Association, concerns of a social policy nature, as well as academic. All members receive this newsletter. Institutions can also subscribe.
- the articulation of social policy concerns expressed by our membership, as well as the promotion of those concerns with the relevant groups or agencies. This has meant the preparation of briefs for presentation to government or other formal organizations, the expression of opinion through letters or publications. Topics, which have been addressed in the recent past, include the Canadianization of education, the position of women, native rights, racism and government funding of the social sciences.
- the possibility of being listed in the CSAA Electronic Communiqué, and to consult our Website, allowing the access to the many sources of information such as: employment within the disciplines, announcements of international congresses, etc.
In addition to these ongoing activities, the CSAA has been able to respond to special interests of its members in a number of ways. Special activities such as the publication of special issues of the journal, booklets on sociology and anthropology and of a Guide to Departments of Sociology, Anthropology and Archeology in Canada have been made possible through the resources of our Association in conjunction with other associations or institutions. CSAA has also established and released a Statement of Professional Ethics approved in June 1994 and now posted on the association Website.
The Association has instituted Awards which are presented at the Awards Ceremony held at the CSAA Annual Meeting. The John Porter Memorial Book Prize recognizes outstanding published scholarly contributions in the past three years which are within the John Porter tradition and are to the advancement of sociological and/or anthropological knowledge in Canada. The Outstanding Contribution Award recognizes the work of eminent Sociologists or Anthropologists. The Service Award recognizes the dedication of members to the development of the Association and recently the Best Student Paper Award was instituted to recognize the best works presented at annual meeting by students.
All of the activities reflect the overall goal of our Association to develop and promote the interests of those involved in sociology and/or anthropology in Canada. Members are always welcome to express those interests and to make use of the resources of the Association to promote them to the advantages of our disciplines as a whole.

La Société canadienne de sociologie et d'anthropologie (SCSA) est une association professionnelle qui se consacre à la recherche, la publication et l'enseignement de la sociologie et de l'anthropologie au Canada. Parmi ses membres se retrouvent des sociologues et des anthropologues qui consacrent leur énergie à la recherche ou à l'éducation dans les universités, les différents paliers de gouvernement ainsi que les entreprises. On retrouve également parmi ses membres des étudiants et des personnes de toutes disciplines ou orientations qui partagent un intérêt commun pour la sociologie ou l'anthropologie. La Société fait également la promotion de l'abonnement à ses publications auprès de toutes les bibliothèques académiques ou autres au travers le Canada et tout autour du monde.
Les activités usuelles de la Société comprennent:
- la publication, depuis 1964, de la Revue canadienne de sociologie et d'anthropologie. La revue est un journal professionnel, publié quatre fois par année, qui inclut des articles et de recensions de livres. Tous les membres et les abonnés de la Société reçoivent cette publication.
- l'organisation de rencontres annuelles en collaboration avec le Congrès de la Fédération canadienne des sciences humaines et sociales. En 2006, cette rencontre annuelle se tiendra à l'Université York, à Toronto, Ontario. Les membres reçoivent toute l'information pertinente quant à ces rencontres.
- la publication de Society/Société. Ce bulletin est publié trois fois par année, dans le but d'informer les membres des événements et des questions intéressant les disciplines. Les sujets incluent les questions administratives, les activités de la Société, les questions touchant tant les politiques sociales qu'académiques. Tous les membres reçoivent ce bulletin.
- l'articulation des questions touchant les politiques sociales exprimées par les membres ainsi que la promotion de ces questions auprès des groupes ou des autorités concernées. Ceci implique la préparation de mémoires pour présentation auprès des gouvernements ou des autres organismes officiels et l'expression d'opinions par des lettres ou d'autres publications. Parmi les sujets qui ont été touchés par le passé, on retrouve la question de la canadianisation de l'éducation, la place des femmes, les droits des autochtones, le racisme et le financement par les fonds publics des sciences sociales.
- la possibilité de souscrire aux Communiqués Électroniques de la SCSA et de consulter le site Internet qui donnent accès à plusieurs sources d'information comme les offres d'emploi dans les différentes disciplines, l'annonce de congrès internationaux, etc.
En plus de ses activités usuelles, la SCSA est en mesure de répondre aux intérêts spéciaux de ses membres de différentes façons. Des activités spéciales telles que la publication de numéros thématiques de la revue, des livrets sur la sociologie et l'anthropologie et un Guide des départements de sociologie, d'anthropologie et d'archéologie au Canada, qui a été rendu possible grâce aux ressources de la Société en collaboration avec d'autres associations ou institutions. La SCSA a aussi adopté et rendu public un Code d'éthique professionnelle approuvé en juin 1994 et disponible sur ce site internet.
La Société a institué des prix et récompenses qui sont présentés lors de la Cérémonie des prix et récompenses qui se tient pendant les rencontres annuelles de la SCSA. Le Prix en mémoire de John Porter reconnaît la contribution exceptionnelle des ouvrages académiques publiés dans les trois dernières années et qui s'inscrivent dans la tradition John Porter et participent à l'avancement de la connaissance sociologique et/ou anthropologique au Canada. Le prix de Contribution remarquable souligne le travail d'éminents sociologues ou anthropologues. Le prix pour Service remarquable souligne le devouement des membres au développement de la Société et récemment, le Prix de la meilleure communication étudiante a été institué pour reconnaître les meilleurs travaux présentés par les étudiants et étudiantes lors des rencontres annuelles.
Toutes ces activités réflètent le but premier de la Société qui est le développement et la promotion des intérêts de ceux et celles qui sont concernés par la sociologie et/ou l'anthropologie au Canada. Les membres sont toujours encouragés à faire part à la Société de ces intérêts et à utiliser les ressources que cette dernière met à leur disposition pour promouvoir leurs intérêts et les avantages de nos disciplines respectives.
